Step inside Hockney’s pictures and hear him tell sixty years.

David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) — Singapore

David Hockney: Bigger & Closer is an immersive projection show at IMBA, Gardens by the Bay, until 1 November. A loop of about 50 minutes in six chapters spans sixty years of Hockney’s work: Yorkshire landscapes, Los Angeles pools, stage designs and iPad drawings. The images fill four walls and the floor, the narration is Hockney’s own recorded voice, and the score is by Nico Muhly. Enter at any point in your booked window and stay to see the full loop.

It is not an appearance by the artist, but a screening in which he talks you through his work.

Four walls and the floor

The pictures cover four walls and the floor; standing in the middle, the woods and pools are many times larger than in a book, as the title promises.

Standing inside the projection puts you in the picture, a closeness the originals cannot give.
