A city remembers in light.

Kobe Luminarie 2027

Eleven months after the Great Hanshin earthquake of January 1995, Kobe lit its first Luminarie, a requiem for the dead that became a symbol of the city’s recovery; 2.54 million people came in eleven days, and it has returned every year since. Luminarie means illuminations in Italian, after the festive decorations of medieval Italy: wooden structures covered in coloured bulbs that build a space of light. Each year has its own theme; the parts are prepared in Italy, shipped to Kobe and assembled by Italian craftsmen and Japanese staff. The 32nd edition runs from 29 January to 7 February 2027 at Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi and the former foreign settlement, with a paid area at Meriken Park.
