Raoul Dufy Dans Tous Ses États — Tokyo
Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was 20th-century France’s painter of colour and light, filling canvases with the sea, sailing boats, music, wheat fields and countryside in vivid colour, and working well beyond painting in textiles, costume, ceramics, tapestry and furniture. For his 150th birthday, this exhibition centres on the collection of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, with about 150 paintings, book illustrations, costumes, textiles, furniture and ceramic decoration showing his art as a whole. The highlight is The Electricity Fairy, the huge mural he made for the Pavilion of Electricity and Light at the 1937 Paris International Exposition: the exhibition shows its 6 m-wide, one-tenth-scale painted study and drawings, and presents the mural in immersive video. It runs from 24 April to 22 August 2027 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
