Tate: Turner — The Sublime in Dialogue with Contemporary Art, Tokyo
Tate in London holds the world’s largest Turner collection, and more than 80 of his oils and watercolours come to the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno from 24 October to 21 February 2027. The rooms are themed and loosely chronological, and set Turner beside contemporary art: in Tokyo, works by ten artists including Olafur Eliasson, Mark Rothko, Wolfgang Tillmans, Cornelia Parker, Katie Paterson and Richard Long. The key image is Hurrah! for the Whaler Erebus! Another Fish!, exhibited in 1846.

Chapter 2 hangs Turner’s views of the Mer de Glace from different years beside Olafur Eliasson’s 30 pairs of photographs of melting glaciers.
The same room has The Fall of an Avalanche in the Grisons, exhibited in 1810.
Tokyo also shows ten contemporary artists, among them Mark Rothko, Wolfgang Tillmans and Cornelia Parker.
They hang along the same route as Turner: the questions he asked are still being asked.
