Time for Love and Prayers: Lithuanian Hand Crafts

This is Japan’s first full exhibition of Lithuanian hand crafts, made with the full cooperation of the Lithuanian National Museum, the Lithuanian National Museum of Art and the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. It brings together verpstė spinning boards, aprons and linens, woodwork such as chairs and towel racks, ceramics and wicker baskets, along with crosses, devotional figures and prints. Lithuania was one of the last countries in Europe to adopt Christianity, and its crosses and figures still carry the ancient Baltic view of the sun, trees and animals. The venue, the former Prince Asaka residence (the museum’s main building), was inspired by the 1925 Paris exposition of decorative arts and is a landmark of Japanese Art Deco. The show runs from 16 January to 28 March 2027 with timed-entry booking; general admission is ¥1,400. It is part of the cultural programme for Lithuania’s 2027 presidency of the Council of the EU.
