Hear Princess Mononoke grow into a symphonic story, then Hisaishi’s new music for the orchestra itself.
Joe Hisaishi × Orchestre de Paris · Esplanade, Singapore
This is not a Ghibli medley. The Orchestre de Paris makes its first Singapore visit with Joe Hisaishi conducting: Debussy’s Petite Suite, then the Princess Mononoke symphonic suite with solo soprano; after the interval, the Southeast Asian premiere of his five-movement Concerto for Orchestra, first performed in Washington in May 2026. Both Esplanade nights are sold out; the organiser has added 14 November at The Star Theatre.
Not a soundtrack medley: Hisaishi rewrote the whole score as a symphonic suite, from the demon god to Ashitaka and San, with a soprano singing the title song midway.

He made the suite in 2016 and reordered it in 2021 to follow the film. Listen for woodblocks, marimba and percussion pressing the curse closer, then for how the orchestra thins out when the soprano enters. Which version is played, and the soloist, have not been announced.

A new work premiered this May, heard here for the first time
The whole second half is Hisaishi’s five-movement, 45-minute concerto written for the orchestra itself, performed for the first time in Southeast Asia.

The National Symphony Orchestra premiered it in Washington in May 2026; the Orchestre de Paris is among its co-commissioners. Hisaishi describes his aim as “the pure motion of sound”, citing Bartók and Steve Reich: driving rhythms in the first and third movements, solos in the inner ones and a finale that joins both. Follow the lines as they pass from woodwind to brass and back to strings.

The Orchestre de Paris’s first visit to Singapore
France’s leading orchestra makes its Singapore debut, opening with 13 minutes of Debussy’s Petite Suite to tune your ear to French woodwind and harp.

The orchestra was founded in 1967. The Petite Suite began as a piano duet (1886–89); its first two movements draw on Verlaine’s Fêtes galantes, and orchestras usually play Henri Büsser’s 1907 orchestration. Hear the lightness of En bateau before the Hisaishi works.
First-hand note from an outdoor Hisaishi concert in the US (page shows 07-22 only); city, year and conductor not stated. A reference for the suite live, not for this cast.
The most stunning part turned out to be Princess Mononoke: from the drums at the start to the violinists playing their hearts out to the singer’s entrance, it was so richly layered.
