Hayato Sumino in Concert — Chopin Orbit
Hayato Sumino reached the semi-final of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition and is known to many on YouTube as Cateen. Chopin Orbit does not split the classics from his own music: Chopin’s Second Sonata and ‘Winter Wind’ étude, Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre and Stravinsky’s Firebird sit in one evening with his Lydian Harp, White Keys and Imaginary Polonaise, with improvisation in between. 25 October, 7pm, Esplanade Concert Hall.
The Second Sonata holds the Funeral March the whole world knows; the ‘Winter Wind’ étude is gust after gust of rapid notes with a clear melody underneath.
Someone who heard him in the same hall in 2024 said his Chopin sounds simple, yet every note seems to shine.
Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre and Stravinsky’s Firebird were written for orchestra.
Tonight they are all in ten fingers: the bass like drums and cellos, the treble like woodwind and violins, skeletons dancing and the firebird in flight, all from one piano.
Lydian Harp, White Keys and Imaginary Polonaise are his own compositions, with improvisation woven through.
The Chopin dances, modes and touch you heard earlier come back transformed in his own pieces: in one evening you hear him carry Chopin into his own orbit.
