Stay a few nights in Guanajuato: a different stage each day, from flamenco to Puccini.
Festival Internacional Cervantino
The Festival Internacional Cervantino grew out of 1950s student performances of Cervantes’ short comic plays in Guanajuato’s squares; this is its 54th edition, 3–18 October, with theatres, churches and squares across the city as stages, and those short plays still performed in Plaza San Roque. Mike Patton and his orchestra open with Mondo Cane; on 10 October the Antonio Gades company dances Carmen, and the violinist María Dueñas plays with the Camerata Salzburg the same night; on 17 October Mexico’s national opera company stages Puccini’s Tosca. Plenty is free, and paid shows start at MXN 140.
