Stephen Schwartz’s Defying Gravity and Popular give voice to two witches’ friendship, differences and choices. The live draw is hearing the music and seeing the flight effect meet in the same moment.
Elphaba rejects the Wizard’s direction as the song builds to the first-act climax. Live voice, lighting and flight combine; its force comes from a character choosing her own path as well as the vocal high point.
